The 39-year-old actress and boyfriend fashion designer Jason Bleick welcomed their son Arthur to their family in July.
Although Selma is in love with her three-month-old she admits that parenthood can be onerous at times.
"This child is a saint. [But motherhood’s] horrifying,” Selma told E! Online at the amfAR Inspiration Gala at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood Thursday.
“You're too tired to enjoy how precious this time is... It is very challenging."
Selma struggles with exhaustion the most. With a newborn baby she simply does not get enough rest at night.
"I'd say about 45 minutes a night is what I sleep," Selma said. "It's a special situation and I cry. Mama cries."
Being a mother is not an entirely wretched experience for Selma. After she is finally able to catch up on some sleep, Selma enjoys waking up to her baby boy.
"The best part of being a mom is his slow smile he gives me every morning when I say, 'Good morning,'" she gushed.
Although many mothers are prepping their children for Halloween trick-or-treating, Selma is not into the holiday spirit. She believes Arthur is too young to get involved in spooky antics.
"What do you do with a dressed-up baby? Give him a bath and put him to bed?” Selma laughed. “It's all kind of silly.”
Selma is also not impressed with the costumes available in Arthur’s size.
"I was trying to have him go as a turtle, but they didn't have infant turtle costumes,” she smiled.
